Why We’re Freaking Out About Substack

First off I want to thank those of you who have followed me over from ldstephens.net and those of you who have found and followed me through other sources. It’s great to have you at My Hangout.

Ben Smith of the New York Times wrote an article about the number of writers building their businesses, mostly newsletters based on the Substack platform.

He writes that some of the reasons writers are moving to Substack are that “they note that many writers simply don’t want to be bothered with anything other than writing, and happily pay the premium for that”. Of course, many writers also chose Substack because it is a place for independent writing. You can start a newsletter/blog, build a community, and make money from a subscription if you want to. Publishing is free, with no limits and Substack only makes money when you do.

Even though I have no plans to make money from my subscribers I still chose Substack to replace what I was doing on Wordpress.com. I like that publishing is free, I can build a community that’s mine, and that I don’t have to be bothered with anything other than writing and publishing. No more block editor, managing themes, yadda, yadda, yadda.

So far I have been happy here and pleasantly surprised at the number of people who have already subscribed.

So again, it’s great to have you at My Hangout.
